DFG-Projekt HE 5943/3

Structure preserving contact formulations of thermomechanical systems

The overall aim of this project is the development of a consistent formulation for multi-field contact problems. In particular, previously developed monolithic description of thermoelastic and thermoviscoelastic models will be extended to include inequality contact constraints for both, frictionless as well as frictional contact problems. Thus, we bring the results of two DFG Grants (HE 5943/1-1 and GR 3297/2-1) together, merge the existing codes and enhance the NTS as well as the Mortar contact formulations with special focus on structure-preserving integration. In particular,  a Coulomb dry friction model will be implemented in this multi-physical environment. The virtual work of contact then consists of the normal and tangential mechanical contributions, as well as of the frictional dissipation and the heat transfer.

Eventually, thermoviscoelastic bodies, written in terms of strains, internal variables, temperature and entropy respectively, which are subject to large deformation contact can be simulated using a robust integration scheme. This allows us to use large time steps, reducing the overall costs for the simulation of large multi-field systems.
