Practical Course in Experimental Solid Mechanics

  • type: practical course
  • semester: winter term
  • ects: 6
  • lv-no.: 6215911
  • exam:

    oral

Mandatory
T-BGU-112376 Basics of Experimental Solid Mechanics
T-BGU-112377 Advanced Experimental Solid Mechanics

Content
Part 1: Basics of Experimental Solid Mechanics (winter term)

  • fundamentals of experimental design
  • specimen fabrication for experimental material characterization
  • experimental determination of basic mechanical material properties (E-modulus, yield stress) in tensile,
    compression and flexure tests
  • creep and relaxation tests on polymers
  • documentation and evaluation of experiments
  • classification of materials based on mechanical behavior

Part 2: Advanced Experimental Solid Mechanics (summer term)

  • theory: strain and stress measurements at large (finite) deformations
  • methods of distortion measurement in finite deformations (extensometer, strain gage, DIC)
  • experimental investigations of anisotropic material behavior
  • tests on materials at different loading conditions (bending, puncture and shear tests)
  • tests at different temperatures
  • tests of cyclic loading
  • tests to determine fracture-mechanical material properties (CT, SENT specimens)

Competence Goal
The students are familiar with methods of experimental solid mechanics, especially for the determination of mechanical material properties. They can apply this knowledge to engineering problems and they can carry out experiments on their own for the deformation analysis and the determination of material properties.
