Prof. Dr. Geert Lombaert - Hauptvortragender 2012

Structural Mechanics Division of the Department of Civil Engineering KU Leuven
Dr. Geert Lombaert (PhD KU Leuven 2001) is Associate Professor at the Structural Mechanics Division of the Department of Civil Engineering of KU Leuven. He has been a visiting postdoctoral fellow at Ecole Centrale de Paris (January 2003-July 2003) and at the University of California, San Diego (April 2008-July 2008). At the Department of Civil Engineering of KU Leuven he teaches courses in Strength of Materials, Structural Mechanics, Matrix Analysis of Structures, and Wave Propagation and Vibrations in the Built Environment. He has also been teaching Computational Mechanics in the International Master in Civil Engineering at the University of Bologna.

Research field

His research interests include environmental vibrations due to traffic and construction activities, inverse problems in structural mechanics, Bayesian inference and uncertainty quantification for vibration-based model updating, health monitoring of civil engineering structures, dynamic force identification, wave propagation and scattering in inhomogeneous and random media, and (robust) shape and topology optimization. He has been involved in many national projects and projects of the EU 6th and 7th Framework Programme and is copromotor of the second phase (2010-2017) of the Centre of Excellence on Optimization in Engineering at KU Leuven (OPTEC). He was member of the Scientific Committee of many international conferences and has co-chaired Eurodyn 2011, the Eighth International Conference on Structural Dynamics (Leuven, 4-6 July 2011).

He is currently (co-)supervisor of 8 Ph.D. students and was involved as a (co-)supervisor or member of the advisory committee of 8 Ph.D. dissertations. He has given several invited/keynote lectures in research institutes and conferences. He has published 46 refereed journal articles, and more than 100 conference articles. In 2000, the OROS European University Millennium Award was awarded to him and G. Degrande.
